Zomerse beelden

garden festival appeltern

19 jan. 2011

studio TOOP’s entry, Through the Looking Glass, has been chosen for the Garden Festival in Appeltern! The design, conceived together with  Carolien Barkman Tuinen, plays with both literal and figurative aspects of this years theme: reflection.

A special thank you to Tess Krüs from Smeltkrüs for her  help with the visualisation. Tess rocks, and we would recommend her highly to any designers – or anyone, really – who need assistance expressing their (spatial) ideas in an image.

“Through the Looking Glass” is the sequel to Lewis Carroll’s classic “Alice in Wonderland”.  Just as the story, this garden reflects on the search for personal identity and meaning. As you walk through the garden your perspective changes continuously.

The garden draws you in, and just as Alice you enter another world. Flowers, butterflies and glittering magnifying glasses surround you. It is as if you are dreaming. You follow the path. You can walk left or right. It doesn’t matter which way you go; you’ll surely get somewhere. The paths are in the form of a labyrinth encircles by transparent flowers in shades of white and pink. You can’t get lost.

Everything shimmers and tinkles. You see lights reflecting all around you. Through a port of branches you enter the center of the garden where hundreds of magnifying glasses are hanging and changing the form of the world around you. You look through a magnifying glass and see the world through other eyes. Nothing is what it seems. You rest in a chair and study the patters of branches, flowers and swaying magnifying glasses. Slowly you rise and continue your journey, rested and with new insight you reenter the ordinary world.
